woman before and after skin lightening

Skin lightening is a treatment that can help people even out their complexion and fight the signs of aging. Skin color is determined by a pigment called melanin. A higher level of melanin means a darker skin color. Our skin color is largely dependent on our genes, but there are certain factors that can affect our skin tone over time and cause uneven discoloration.

Some of these factors are:

  • hormones
  • skin damage
  • exposure to specific chemicals

Some of these discolorations can fade over time- such as a suntan or a pregnancy mask. Other types of discolorations can be more permanent and will require treatment in order to fade. These include age spots, acne scars or liver spots.

Skin lightening (or skin bleaching) helps to reduce permanent skin discoloration. In order to target dark age spots or scars, there are a few different approaches to take.

Face Creams

There are many different types of non-invasive creams you can buy over the counter. Keep in mind that several of these products contain an ingredient called hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is closely regulated by the FDA and will also require dermatologist supervision. An easier option would be a cream containing natural ingredients like retinol, which comes from Vitamin A. An anti-aging cream with this ingredient is a gentle approach that is also very effective at lightening age spots and discolorations resulting from skin damage.

Skin Treatments

For more severe cases of dark spots, your dermatologist may suggest a more invasive approach. These treatments include:

Chemical Peel

A chemical solution is applied to facial skin, causing exfoliation and peeling. The new skin will be smoother underneath.

Microdermabrasion

This technique uses a mild abrasive to sand away the old layers of skin and remove age spots, sun damage, discoloration, and scars.
